Machenje Fishing Lodge lies in the heart of a prime stretch of the river that offers exceptional fishing. The world-renowned tigerfish,is indigenous to the Zambezi River. This species, well known for its fierce appearance and strong fighting and leaping ability when on the line, has earned the reputation of being one of the world's toughest freshwater fish to restrain. Tigerfish and bream are plentiful in this part of the Zambezi. Read more about the river and its fishes.
All fishing is done on a catch and release basis to preserve the precious fish resources of the Upper Zambezi River. Guests are allowed to remove their fish from the water to be weighed and photographed, provided the fish are handled carefully, under the supervision of our guides.
Our guides are highly experienced fishermen and boatmen, giving you the best opportunity to catch that dream fish.
But Machenje is not just about the fishing. Birdwatchers will enjoy the wealth of birdlife along the river, with many species of herons, egrets, storks and plovers to be found. The river also offers the chance to see rare specialities such as the African finfoot, a secretive bird of the river margins, African skimmers and rock pratincoles, as well as many other species of interest to the birdwatcher. Boat trips can be arranged as a lodge activity, or specialist birdwatching trips can be organised within the extended region.
Scenic river cruise options are also available.
Guests can also enjoy the river through specially arranged guided canoe trips, travelling downstream along this magnificent stretch of river.
